I used to be a dental assistant, so the dentist I worked for had been in the Navy, and that’s where he became interested in becoming a dentist and then went to Ohio State. And he did excellent work, and he used to point out to me what should be done, what a dentist shouldn’t do, and that type of thing. So since then, I’ve always judged every dentist I go to by the work they do for me. If I don’t think it’s up to par, then I don’t go back, or I’ll have them redo it. And here I’ve never had any question in my mind about it after the first time.

What led into the bridge was that I had had two of the teeth already worked on, and the one in the middle had to be extracted. And so they had to fit it to two teeth and make it look like a whole back tooth. As far as the crowns go, they do the preliminary, then they make sure that you know how long it will take. And if you have any questions or any concerns, they always tell you, “Call us back.”

Getting the restorations is kinda complicated with me. I’m diabetic, I have A-fib, and they work to make it all work with my conditions. I have to take antibiotics an hour before I have anything done because I’ve had hip and knee replacement. And they don’t want to see any of the bad stuff move into the hip and the knee. But I always get a call reminding me of my appointment and making sure that I have my antibiotics to take, and they encompass the whole thing. I would say that I have had nothing but positive interaction with everyone here. And the fact that we can still smile. And if I’m going crazy, they’ll calm me down. So, you know, again, it’s that wonderful teamwork, outstanding doctor and the staff that is marvelous.

One of them is the workmanship, like I talked about. They try to get everything right, and they’re always asking me if I have anything to add, if there’s anything that I think needs to be done differently, and I appreciate that. They don’t just go in and think that they have the answers to everything. Because we’re all individuals and some things may be better for one person than another person so I appreciate that.

So, the problem I was having was pain, you know. And then part of my tooth had broken off. So, I came in. And the doctor took x-rays and explained that, you know, I had several… Well, I had a couple of different options because my bone was intact. I could get the implant, which is what I was looking for, but he explained that it was possible that I could get a bridge. You know, he explained the benefits and the adversity of all of, you know, my options. And, you know, kind of let me make that decision and… So, yeah, that’s… I really appreciated that.

I settled on the implant idea because I like a more permanent solution than having a bridge. My bone structure was good, good enough to make that happen. What I thought was really cool was he took me back and showed me, you know, the scan that went all the way around my head, and showed me and pointed out, you know, different things about my teeth and, you know, why the different options would work or wouldn’t work. So, I felt very comfortable, I felt very confident. And I let him know, you know, well, this is what’s happened to me before. And, you know, if Novocaine or the anesthetic seems to wear off pretty quickly. He said, you know, “Don’t worry about that.” You know, as he’s doing procedures, and pulling the teeth and things, they are always talking to you to keep you updated, like you know what’s going on, and checking to make sure you’re comfortable.

Well, I had some wearing down of the teeth and one of my front teeth had been broken when I was 16, and they just kept putting plaster or whatever it is in there. And it became very sensitive, and there was getting to be a gap because my teeth were moving. For me, it made a big difference. Other people may not have noticed the little things that I had, but I did. And it just made me feel good. Don’t put it off because it’s something that will make you feel better. And at Glendale Gentle Dentistry here, they’re kind, they’re professional, good price, and clean, which is a big thing. And they don’t like to hurt.

Many years ago when I was young, I’d had a lot of fillings. And back in those days they used like mercury and that type of thing. And so I’ve been having that replaced, and several of them got decay in them. And so I ended up having to get one tooth up here that had to have a pretty extensive crown on it, which I had. And after about three or four months, I was on a trip and it fell out. So I got that and I brought it back and, “Dr. Stanfield, can you fix this?” And he says, looked at my tooth and his says, “No.” He says, “That’s too far gone. So, what we’ll have to do is we need to extract that tooth and then we’ll build a bridge.” Which is three teeth that they put together.

And so that was it, but he took care of it right away. I mean, as soon as I got back, I could call and I think he had me in that day. So, that’s always good. When you have an emergency and you need something, they work extra hard to get you in right away. Basically when he took a look and looked at what it needed, and then he explained and clarified why we need to do a bridge over just putting the crown back on. And then explain what was he was gonna do. The staff was very supportive, they figured out how much it was going to cost so that you knew upfront exactly what the services were gonna be. All around they were just more than happy to… Seemed like more than happy to take care of you right away and within less than a week I had my tooth out. And within two or three weeks I had the bridge after it was built. So well it’s much better. I can eat on both sides of my mouth again. And it’s felt great, I don’t even realize it’s there most of the time.

There was a few cracks here and there. Just the general wear and tear from old fillings from when I was a child. It was just years of wear. And getting the crowns was an interesting procedure because you’ve got the temporaries and you have to deal with that a day or two and get the crowns in a week and get the crowns on. And I’ve not had any issues at all. And again, you know, their being supportive, kind of just gives you that, “Oh, I got this,” and you don’t have to really worry about it.

You put all your trust in them, and I’ve had no issues whatsoever. Right now I am 100% happy. They look better, they feel better. I’m a horrible person about chewy, gummy things, and gums and things like that. So, it is a little bit of a lifestyle change with that. My vitamins are all gummy style, so I’m having to kind of adjust here and there. But again, it’s well worth it. And I have no pain, I have no issues following that. It’s just that thought process before you do chew gum or have something chewy to eat, you’re going, “Ooh”. Yeah. But right now I’m 100% happy, happy.

I was born and raised in West Texas where there was, in my day, limited fluoride was added to the water. So therefore we have more chalky type teeth that break easily, they stain easily, and things like that. Root canals are scary. Definitely. Especially because as a teenager, I had four root canals on the same tooth. That was a problem for years and years and years. He literally was able to fix that in one swipe.

And with the others, yes, it is unnerving, it is mental, it is your thought process. I have changed somewhat because I know he’s gonna take care of me. After the one, he was like, “Okay, let’s go.” And, you know, having several done, and I think I still have maybe one more to go. It’s not as nerve racking, if you will to even sweat the procedure or anything because I already know these guys are going to take care of me.

With my schedule being a very crazy mixed up schedule, we would plan like mid afternoon, early afternoon so I could finish my day here. I do tend to be a little more worried about pain. So he started out just with minimal injections, and then if he started and I was still having pain, I would get another injection. He made sure I was comfortable at all times. It worked. It worked fine. I was able to tolerate it and not have any issues.
